Introduction
I've owned a Humax 9200T PVR for a couple of years and been very pleased with it. It's a device that allows me to record and pause Freeview TV channels on a hard disk (much like the box that comes with Sky). The current model is the 9300T and is available from Amazon: Humax PVR9300T 320GB Twin Tuner, PVR
However, I've had all sorts of problems transferring video from it to my laptop. Now I've finally solved them all and got it all working so I thought I'd write up my findings.
Setup
I couldn't get on at all with the software that came with the humax. It turned out that many others felt the same way!!
Eventually, I stumbled across Andy Chappell's excellent piece of software to replace it. You can find it (along with installation instructions) here: http://www.enigma.eclipse.co.uk/humax/HumaxMediaController.html
Andy's software will work fine on a 32 bit version of windows, but if you're on a 64 bit machine, you'll have to jump through an extra hoop. At the time Andy originally wrote his program, the drivers he based it on were only available in a 32 bit version. That's not the case any more and you can download the 64 bit driver from here: http://www.dimmick.demon.co.uk/blog/HumaxPVR.zip
To install the driver, unzip the downloaded file and drop libusb0.dll into the folder for Andy's Media Controller (replacing the one that's already there).
Transferring Video
- Put the Humax into 'Games' mode (the 'G' button, bottom right hand side of the slide out section on your remote control). This stops the humax streaming tv to the output and seems to free up its processor to concentrate on the transfer
- If you're using a 64 bit machine, you'll need to reboot , hit F8 whilst it fires up and select the option that allows unsigned drivers.
- Plug in your USB lead and follow Andy's instructions to do the transfer
